Under the expert development leadership of Matthews West, Carbon Engineering (CE) broke ground in mid‑2020 on a pioneering Direct Air Capture (DAC) Innovation Centre in Squamish, British Columbia. Situated within the Oceanfront Squamish development, this approximately 1,250 sq m facility includes operations labs and a fully integrated DAC and “Air‑to‑Fuels™” plant—leveraging captured CO₂, water, and clean electricity to produce ultra‑low‑carbon synthetic fuels.
The Innovation Centre not only positioned CE as a global leader in climate tech but also delivered immediate local benefits. Its construction phase alone created about 45 full‑time jobs, while immediately boosting Squamish’s employment landscape by adding to CE’s existing 90 local team members. Development partners—including CE, Matthews West, provincial officials, and local leadership—highlighted how this milestone reflects Squamish’s growing reputation as a hub for clean‑energy innovation, driven by its supportive environment, thriving economy, and shared climate ambitions.
Since its inception, CE’s presence has continued to expand in Squamish. In mid‑2024, the company acquired 4.5 acres in the Squamish Business Park along Queens Way—just north of downtown—to build a complementary research and development complex. These forthcoming multi‑bay R&D and lab spaces will add flexibility and scale to CE’s innovation capabilities. Matthews West remains a key collaborator, seamlessly extending the Oceanfront Squamish vision into this next phase, and helping ensure Squamish remains a global innovation focal point for DAC technologies.
